Regenerative Agriculture
We are engaged in integrated sustainable farming incorporating mixed farming, while  practicising crop rotation  that facilitates  maintaining good quality of  soil. Our farm is synthetic fertiliser and chemical pesticide free where the bulk of our organic inputs are  sourced from within the farm to facilitate increase of micro nutrients.

This model benefits the establishment of  a strong micro climate through planting of Gravellia Robusta, mangoes, oranges, moringa, manuka, cocoa  lucerne alongside Calliandra trees(agroforestry) providing an ecosystem that sustains the development and growth of our bee colonies within the setting. To complete this cycle of strenghtening the value chain linkages, we have established a fruit/tree nursery  that  serves as reservoir for local farmers and self help farming groups supporting the incubation of agro forestry  as a business for creating wealth  and protecting the environment.

We use technology
To minimise wastage of water, spraying of organic input and at the same time increasing yield with wider environmental benefits, we have introduced a drone fitted with 4k camera for inspection of the crops, weeds, fencing and general security surveillance of the farm. The data collected via a mobile device to aid agronomic decision-making underpinning soil health, plant health and pest infestation as well as the health of the bees in the farm.

We work with
(i.)  Young people
(ii.) Women
(iii.) Vulnerable groups including those with physical disabilties, learning difficulties and mental illness as well as the elderly groups

Who are we?

AJO Gem Community Foundation was established to unlock the potential of the vulnerable communities in South Gem, Siaya county where there is a high prevalence of poverty, unemployment, HIV/Aids, Malaria & TB  At the end of the spectrum are women and youth who have low skills, lack viable economic activities, impacting on health outcomes of their children with reported low retention rates in schools due illness or poverty.

The program focuses on the potential of food production through technology transfer, control of resources, improve quality of products through the building of strong linkages within the value chain so that the supply chain actors are brought closer to the market This incorporates strengthening linkages between the small actors and the market in agricultural production to improve economic livelihoods of small producers engaged in beekeeping, fruit, vegetable and cereal farming.

Objectives

  • Lock the market, promote and improve the socio-economic lifestyle of vulnerable people including  women and youth groups, create wealth through gainful employment opportunities, downsize the technology, promoting research and sustainable development.
  • Improve the traditional skills for appropriate utilisation of locally available  vegetable, fruit and cereal production
  • Provide the means to an end to enable the actors to control resources  through value addition to sustain income sources
  • Design, improve and preserve the quality of products through innovative scientific solutions and technology transfer  for value addition
  • Enhance participation of vulnerable groups, namely women and youth groups  in low-cost food production and marketing in a sustainable way
  • Initiate programs that support climate change  resilience  and harness the potential of natural resources to support sustainable food production

OUR MISSION

AJO Gem is a leader in supporting farmers and its strategic partners to improve farming practices, realising high value returns, and ensuring that the value chain actors are engaged in integrated sustainable food production.

OUR VISION

A strong vibrant economy where  the participating groups are equiped with appropriate skills through strengthening of value chain linkages to enable them live independently as they build food systems that are sustainable

Outputs

  • Existing county & national food production strategies are aligned with initiatives supporting the development of improved  horticulture,  cereal, and fruit crop production that breaks down the barriers linked to poverty, unemployment, and poor health outcomes
  • Competitiveness and viability of horticulture, fruit and cereal  value chains are strengthened  through improved  inclusive business  models, sustainable intensification, production, building capacity of SME and that of farmer's organisations and individual farmers
  • Access to information & improved finances for farmers
  • Farmers have access to climate risk management instruments

We produce high quality seedlings that are carefully selected for high yields of fruits. The nursery is managed under good agronomic practices under the supervision of the farm manager who has extensive experience in farm management practices, soil management and quality assurance.

Our food production is entirely organic enhanced by technology solutions applied diligently to monitor progress, ultimately, improving quality of our products, which is of high demand.

Our farming activities

Bee hives

We keep bees in their natural environment by ensuring that they interact with the ecosystem and contributing immensely towards pollination of plants

Soybeans

We produce high quality soya beans that are planted alongside passion fruits periodically to help with nitrogen fixing in the soil. We process soybeans to produce cooking oil and animal seed cakes a source of proteins  for animal.

Passion fruits

We produce high quality organic passion fruits  that is sold locally to support the nutrient deficit for the local population

Sunflower

Our sunflower provide the bees with the much needed pollen & nectar which we process to produce cooking oil & animal seed cake

The orchard

Our passion fruit orchard is professionally managed and we practice mixed farming, planting soy beans in between the passion fruits

Agroforestry

Our tree nurseryis populated with both fruit trees and trees which contributes to the micro-climate

Help us continue our work

We would   like to partner with like minded organisations interested or practising integrative agriculture and organic farmer to help us  grow as we protect our environment.
